Robert A. Grant

U.S. Veteran

Robert A. Grant, 87, Middleton, formerly of Lake Mills, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at his apartment at Heritage Senior Living in Middleton.

He was born on August 24, 1925 in Janesville, the son of the late Curtis A. and Hazel (McKeige) Grant.

He was a graduate of Janesville High School and Milton College.

Robert married Joyce E. Root of Fond du Lac on March 26, 1949. She died on Jan. 28, 1999.

A resident of Jefferson, WI from 1950 to 1982, he and his wife had spent the summers in Lake Mills from 1978 and moved to Lake Mills in 1982.

He was V.P. and plant manager at Stoppenbach Meats in Jefferson, retiring in 1981.

Robert was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. 20th Army Air Force, Sixth Bombardment Group, as left gunner of a B-29 Superfortress. He was a P.O.W., interned at the Omori camp, near Tokyo, Japan.

Robert was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the American Theater medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Theater medal with numerous campaign battle stars, including the Aerial Offensive against Japan, Western Pacific Campaign, Eastern Mandate Campaign and the Chinese Offensive. He was a member of the Lake Mills V.F.W. Post #10771, charter member of Jefferson Ducks Unlimited, member of Reinhardt-Windl American Legion Post #164 in Jefferson, and the Fort Atkinson D.A.V. Chapter #39.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen of Middleton, Susan (Richard Klein) of Dallas, TX; two sons, Rick (Terrie) of Fort Atkinson, David of LaCrosse; four grandchildren, Alissa Andraski, Erik Andraski, Katie Grant, Scott Grant, and one great granddaughter, Taylor Grant; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Grant of Janesville, nieces, Janis (Conrad) Stanek, Rebecca and nephew, Mark; and other relatives and friends.

Also preceding in death was his brother, Curtis O. Grant, and nephew, Kevin Grant.

Private Family services and burial with military graveside rites will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville on Wednesday, January 30, and the family will host an informal celebration with friends at Rick Grant’s Sunset Bar and Grill, 7905 High Ridge Road, Fort Atkinson, WI from 3 to 8 pm following the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the William S. Middleton VA Hospital, 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI 53705, or to the veteran’s organization of your choice.
